Blogr Update Xmas 07

Dear blogr-User,

Yesterday night (21st of December, 2007) we performed another update of the blogr service.

The most important change is that now all our blogr-installations share the same user-database. This means, that a user that is for example registered at blogr.com, can now also authenticate at all the other available blogr-domains, such as blogr.at, blogr.de,...

A newly added feature, is the possibility to add Pages to your Site. See the new item in your menu, resp. also see the PageWidget.

Additionally we finally activated Spam Protection for Comments.

Merry Xmas!

  your blogr team

Bug Fix Update - August 2007

Hi

We just performed an update of our blogr service, in order to fix a number of issues, that kept bugging our users:

  • Updated the Story Editor (tinyMCE) to the latest Version, so that inserting of YouTube-videos should be no longer a problem
  • Fixed the editing and deletion of multiple Media-Files
  • Tags are now shared for Stories and Media
  • Added a shared TagCloud (see here for example)
  • Enhanced User-Interface for Comments

Blogr Update April 07

Long time, no hear.

Yes, we haven't been too active here at blogr, but be assured that this project is still on our radar. Things are progressing, but unfortunately much slower than we were hoping for.

Today we performed another minor update, that brings the following new features to you:

Enjoy!

Voicemail from Matthias via Google Talk (33 seconds) (00:16)

This is a test using the newest version of Google Talk

Podcasts

Yesterday we launched a first version of our podcast support.

Now you can create your own podcast show by simply recording an MP3 file and upload it to your site. We will take care of all the rest. Your visitors will be able to subscribe to your podcast using the RSS feed or open it directly with iTunes. Try it!

PLEASE! respect copyrighted music.
We will delete all sites uploading copyrighted material without any excuse! - and we mean what we say!

If you have a band and want to upload your own songs you are very welcomed.

Changes in base.css

If you started to use a custom layout, you may have expirienced, that the sidebar is rendered below the content, and not where it should be: beside the content.

To fix this we will add the following rule to the base.css in the next days.

#content { float: left; }
#sidebar { float: right; }
body { text-align: center; }
#container { margin: 0 auto; text-align: left; }

we also fixed the default layout of the blog title in the banner:

#banner-header {
font-size: 2em;
font-weight: normal;
margin: 0.3em 0.2em;
}

you may copy these two rulesets to your custom stylesheet to test it with your own design.

Customizable Layouts and a Flash File-Uploader

We have been pretty busy lately to add some more features to our blogr-service, that have been missed by the users.

  • There is now a cool Flash-based File-Uploader (requires Flash version 8 though), which makes it a lot easier to upload multiple files. This uploader allows you to select as many files as you want from your disk, and you can lean back and watch the progress bar while your files get uploaded.

  • You will now also find a separate menu item, where you can manage the Comments at your space. We even implemented Comment Moderation, in case that you want to take a look at the comments before they get published on your space.
  • Last but not least, we made the Layouts customizable. There is an easy interface, which allows you to change the colors of your space, and you can even change/add some images to your layout. Additionally, if you feel daring and have a solid knowledge of HTML and CSS, then you can also completely adapt the stylesheet of your space to your needs.

So, what's next? A couple of features, like improved photo albums and (finally!) Podcasts, we will very likely role out in the upcoming week. Following that, we have lots of or more ideas/stuff for blogr that we will be working on (yes, simple blogrolls is among them). So, stay tuned! And have a good time here at blogr.

international feedback

"Spread the word" - that's how it works! We got some international coverage in well known blogs: Martin Varsavsky wrote about blogr.es in his spanish blog, but others as Genbeta and Microsiervos gave us some credit. If you are looking for some screenshots, have a look at econectados.com

French bloggers are talking about it: have a look it at netvizz or this blogging e-zine. I am sure, there is more feedback in other languages (like the one in this Guardian Blog), so you are welcome to add further links below or drop us a mail: blogr [at] knallgrau.at. Or even better, post it in your own blog or send the links above to your mates. Thnx!

New RSS 2.0 Feeds

We updated the RSS 2.0 support recently. Now you should see a human readable output when clicking on the Blog (RSS 2.0) Blog (RSS 2.0) feed button. And for all those wondering what RSS is we also added a short introduction:

This is a formatted version of the RSS 2.0 feed of http://feedback-alpha.blogr.com/stories/rss20.xml, and is meant to be read by computer programs. RSS is used to aggregate content from several sources (Blogs, News Sites, Podcasts, Videocasts,..) for easier/faster reading, and allows one to watch a large number of sources for updates, without having to browse to all these sites manually. In order to get started with RSS you need to either sign up for one of the (usually cost-free) online services (e.g. Bloglines), or download a desktop program, and add this URL to the list of your subscriptions.

bonjour, hola, moi und hallo

We just launched french, spanish, finish! and german versions of blogr. So from now on blogr will speak your language and the people around you using blogr will too.

Each country runs on a seperate installation, will have it's own info blog, forum, support and portal.

All user names are unique across all installations. This means if you already created an account at blogr.com and want to move to one of the local versions please write us an email. We will delete your name (and space) from the blogr.com installation, so you can create an account with your name on one of the local portals.

Sorry for the inconvenience. We will try to support you as good as we can to also transfer your content. Just write us an email.

Reboot 8.0

We are currently at the reboot in copenhagen and will demo blogr.com to a bunch of geeks tomorrow.

New Designs

The single most requested feature is "customizing the design".

To shorten the waiting time until the full functionality is available we started providing two more very simple layouts. The well known "Kubrick" design from Michael Heilemann and a very simple (yet grey) SimpleGrey. Currently you will miss the ability to change any pictures used in the template or colors.

Video Update

Some of you reported problems with the encoding of uploaded videos like very low frame rate, or missing sound. Most of these bugs should be gone. We are now using a different encoder for some of the formats. We also increased the quality (data rate) of the encoded videos which makes them look much better when streched to the size of the video player.

We currently use FlowPlayer for embeding videos. This is a very simple and easy player, but also has some limitations. So we are currently developing a replacement for that. This should also fix the aspect ratio problem with videos that are not 4:3.

Welcome

to the public alpha of blogr.com

Because of the many requests we got after the article in derstandard, we decided to open the service for public alpha testing. So that's what you are propably doing right now.

Many things are still a little buggy (just noticed that 'available tags' are broken Cry) and some parts of the service are not even online yet (for example podcasting). We still hope that you get a first picture and we would be happy about every feedback we can get. Just use this blog called "feedback-alpha" or write us an email to blogr AT knallgrau DOT at

Press Coverage

Helmut Spudich from derstandard.at couldn't wait to write about blogr, despite the fact that we've not been online yet :-)

dkg made a print shot

3,2,1....

Just made an update on the server to reflect the latest development bugfixes in CVS. We are in the last round before we remove the need to log in to access the alpha testing area.

What is included

  • Total rework of HTML/CSS structure for site layouts
    some layouts just made out of pure CSS are on their way to show the power of this move.
  • Videos are now transcoded into flash, and we extract preview images and metadata - this makes navigation throughj videos a lot easier and better looking
  • Improved resizer on photo list pages (smoother and faster)
  • Better looking paginator (this is the thing at the end of endless list, that is saying Page 1 | 2 | 3 ...)
  • AJAX inline editing for tags, titles and descriptions for photos and videos
  • Improved details page for images
  • too many smaller fixes to count

What's next

  • remove stuff that can't be easily fixed (day pages, podcasts)
  • remove stuff that just seems too much (files section)
  • add some layouts
  • add an easy way to switch between layouts
  • work on admin center

help us to get rid of the last bugs - and stay tuned

Layouts Reloaded

Blogr.com needs layouts.

In the last couple of days a lot of energy was put into rewritting the HTML/CSS structure for the site/space layouts. (Not yet online). We tried to become as compatible as possible with the standard layouts of SixApart (MovableType, TypePad, LiveJounal).

Now we are searching for great blog designs to start with. They need to be pretty, clean, lean, exciting, colorful, funny, anything but ugly :) - and they need to be licensened liberal. CC or BSD-style or Public Domain. We don't need any exclusive rights and we would be very happy to present any copyright information or attribution.

If you are not sure about the license of a loayut please contact the author/owner of the loayout/blog.

So if you have any good links just post them as a comment.

Suggested Tags

From today on you when you are writing a new blog posting, you will notice a "Suggested Tags" list additional to the existing "Available Tags".

What is this?

Tags are a useful way to organize your blog entries. They just work like categories, but are more flexible and: easier to create. To make the task of tagging even easier we added a feature called "Suggested Tags".

Most of the time tags you would use are already part of the text you are writting, and it's just too much extra work to type those words again into the "Tags" field. Suggested Tags will analyse the text of your blog posting and extract the most useful terms. So all you have to do is to click on one of the suggested tags to add them to your blog posting.

How does it work?

To make this wonder work, we are using the REST-API of tagthe.net, a project some very talented people at knallgrau are working on.

Happy Tagging!

- matthias

p.s. This feature is brought to you by michi - great job and thanks!

Bugfixes and upcoming features

Yesterday and today we checked in some bugfixes.

The WYSIWYG editor was updated and a lot of bugs that had been introduced with the switch to TinyMCE 2.0 some time ago where fixed. We also added the possibility to paste in embed/object tags (and whatever tag you like) via the HTML button.
One problem is remaining: When you use the editor you shouldn't open the Javascript console on firefox.

We also introduced a fallback for Windows Media Player on firefox for AVI files. SO if you use that configuration - now it should load the player again.

And one more small, but important bugfix: The icon for the size control on the image list pages was missing ... shame on me!

So, what's next?

There are some exciting features in the pipeline:

  • Bodi is working on albums
  • Max and Michi are working on Flash Videos - realy cool. That will also lead to better looking
  • Me and Markus are working on the service navigation (toolbar)
  • We also work on the general layout of sites. We got a lot of feedback, that you are missing the possibility to change the layouts. The improvement of this feature will be a slow process, and we ask for your patience. It's just a lot harder to maintaine a lot of different designs, and the HTML/CSS structure for the site layouts is not yet stable enough.

Another Update

Just made another update here.

New features include:

  • improved detail informations on image view page
  • added an image details page with exif data and more
  • some minor improvements to media lists and views
  • AND: drumroll!
    dynamic list resizing for photocast (photo list)

please give it a try, and like always: feedback is welcomed.

p.s.
The last video update wasn't perfect enough. The problem is that the support for Windows Media Player on Firefox is realy bad. We are investigating for a "better" solution, until we are switching to Flash Video.

Video Update

The way how videos are embeded got a major update.

Please check it out.

Feedback

Dear Alpha-Testers!

blogr.com is currently in alpha stage. This means

  • that we got everything up and running
  • that we implemented most of the main features of this upcoming service,
  • and that we think that we are ready to invite a closed group of people to click around and test-drive blogr.com

But being 'alpha' also implies, that you might stumble over some bugs, some untranslated messages and some unintended behavior.

But most importantly being 'alpha' means to us, that we are highly interested in your general opinion of this service, and would like to get some feedback on what features and customization-possibililties you are missing the most, resp what you think that others (future blogr-users) might be missing.

So, please feel free and post any feedback (and also bug-reports) here as comments. Alternatively you are also more than welcome to send us a message to blogr@knallgrau.at.

Thanks!
